Step inside the studio of Regular Rick, where layers of colour, sandpaper and chance shape the finished artwork.

Returning to art in his early thirties, Rick has spent nearly two decades exploring different materials and ways of making. In this film for the PROCESS exhibition at CRATE59, he shares an approach built around layering acrylic paint, sanding back the surface and responding to what appears beneath.

Sometimes a painting begins with a planned image; other times, emerging lines and shapes guide its direction. His portraits and skull imagery draw on the bold lines and imperfect textures of hand-printed lino cuts, creating richly worked surfaces with unexpected flashes of colour.

Rick talks openly about happy accidents, taking things too far and finding a way forward. It’s an engaging glimpse into a process where experimentation matters, and the surface of a painting can suggest its next move.
