Step inside Jennifer Frei’s studio as she shares the inspirations, experiments and patient work behind her art.

From carving with her father to working as a pastry chef and later studying photography and filmmaking, Jennifer has always enjoyed making things. Her love of detail runs through her black-and-white drawings and sculptural forms, drawing inspiration from Escher, coral, mushrooms—and even the swirl of cream from a piping bag.

In this film for the PROCESS exhibition at CRATE59, Jennifer takes us through the creation of her mushroom-inspired sculpture. Beginning with a simple sketch, she builds flowing, teardrop-shaped forms using braided wire, foam and layers of plaster, carefully sanding and refining each surface.

It’s a warm, candid look at the curiosity, problem-solving and persistence involved in bringing an idea to life—and an artist discovering new possibilities in her materials.
