RUTH MALLOCH

Step into Ruth Malloch’s studio, where familiar North Queensland landscapes take on a dreamlike quality through colour, light and imagination.

A Cairns artist with a long history of creative experimentation, Ruth draws inspiration from morning walks along the Esplanade, local beaches, creeks and the Tablelands. Her paintings explore how these places feel, capturing the mood and energy of an encounter with nature.

In this film for the PROCESS exhibition at CRATE59, Ruth shares how she builds her paintings through layers of acrylic and oil, often drawing directly with her brush. She also discusses her more spontaneous surreal works, allowing images to emerge through play and responding to what happens on the canvas.

From a glowing yellow sunrise to richly coloured forests and waterways, it’s an inviting look at an artist who trusts her instincts and gives the paint room to lead.
