Mahar Gorospe-Lockie
Meet Mahar Gorospe-Lockie, a landscape artist whose vivid paintings draw on memories, travel and a deep connection to the environment.
From coastal experiences in the Philippines to life in Australia, Mahar has long found inspiration in tropical landscapes. In this film for the PROCESS exhibition at CRATE59, she shares how walking the Larapinta Trail with friends opened up a new world of desert colours and forms—and inspired paintings about caring for one another.
Mahar talks us through her intuitive process, where long periods of looking give way to short, energetic bursts of painting. Each mark changes the shapes around it, creating an ongoing conversation between colour, curves and space.
Surrounded by her richly coloured canvases, she reflects on following unexpected possibilities, allowing mistakes to remain and gradually discovering what a painting can become. It’s a warm glimpse into the thought and feeling behind her work.
