ED KOUMANS
Meet Ed Koumans, an artist who finds creative possibilities in the things other people might throw away.
In this film for the PROCESS exhibition at CRATE59, Ed shares his approach to assemblage—bringing found objects together to create new artworks. Collected bric-a-brac, chance discoveries and everyday colours can spark an idea, with some objects waiting years before finding their place.
Looking back over decades of painting and making, Ed reflects on his first exhibition at 48 and his involvement in North Queensland’s arts community. He also takes us through the creation of a boxed assemblage, explaining how a timber coaster, resin features and an assortment of objects gradually became a character.
With humour and an instinct for balance, Ed embraces the surprises that happen along the way. It’s a candid glimpse into a practice built on curiosity, collecting and the willingness to take a chance.
