TEMPLATE is the final exhibition for Crate59 this year and is created by wife and husband team Janelle and Clyde Williams, who are also both founding members of the artist-run contemporary art studio.

The couple have exhibited separately and together there over the past five years and although their current exhibition seems to show them to have a quite a different approach to their art, Janelle says they have common interests in their work.

“We both have an interest in playing with different surfaces, and are minimalist,” Janelle Williams, who is also a teacher at Trinity Bay High School, says.
The exhibition opened last Friday and was well supported by Crate59 art enthusiasts as well as the students of Janelle and Clyde (Clyde works at Cairns State High School). They do both, however, also have different approaches to their work.

“Clyde’s work is normally assemblage but for this one he worked with glass on paper,” Janelle says.

“Mine is created from building remnants, with homepaint and veneer salvaged from furniture and graphite.”

The connection lies in the theme of template.

Janelle says her work looks like old house plans from an aerial view with each work evoking a different house, a different story and a different narrative that could have been played out in the dwelling.

Clyde’s work is about folding complex shapes with a blend of colours that come forward and then recede – he has taken cues for the designs from looking at patterns and form in origami.

“He has used colour to suggest depth and dimensionality, and the shapes and planes of colour play on the page and begin to take on a three dimensional feel,” Janelle says.
