Exploring themes drawn from her Canadian heritage, Tennyson juxtaposes sinister notions of game hunting culture with the traditionally delicate domestic crafts of lacework and tapestry to create a cosily 'nannified' yet ultimately unsettling set of images and objects.

(absence of) COLOUR

An exhibition of abstractions in colour and line built upon processes of restricting, repeating, erasing or denying these elements.

Through self imposed rules these works explore the need of each artist is rebuild a foundation of pursing a relationship with the visual world using a minimalist approach focused tightly on hue, surface, tonality and mark rather than form and representation.

In (absence of), works uncover and express accumulated visual static through the physicality of passing marks of graphite through fresh gesso surfaces. Additional works explore the play of matt rubbed back, buffed or embossed graphite marks against the throw of light from a determined line. The works attempt to reveal and tap the integrity of these most base materials.

In COLOUR, works stack unconventional colour relationships beside each other and weave lush, free form brush strokes of colour against strong vertical bars. This push and pull of unrestrained horizontal colour and line and the carefully controlled vertical recurs across each of the works. The unorthodox choices of commercial enamel paint colours alongside fine art acrylics sets up a play and rhythm that is visually investigated in these works.

LockART + DISmob

Young artists from Lockhart River and DISmob, the recently formed young Indigenous designers collective present two exciting exhibitions of painted and printed works during Sept/Oct at Crate59.

LockART is a new wave of young artists growing their practice and developing unique styles of working out of Lockhart River. Supported by a dedicated team of teachers and community members these impressive and energetic young artists are making their mark on Far North Queensland and telling their stories through their own eyes and imagery.
Featuring: Peter Pascoe, Zackary Claudie, Ruby Convent, Shenika Rocky, Zane Neal, Tommy Lallara, Timisha Giblet, Beatrice Hobson and Jacinta Elu.

DISmob is a new, innovative collective of young Indigenous designers. Working in collaboration with Cairns-based design company Ingeous Studios, and supported by REACH Arts, these young artists are expanding the representation of Indigenous arts practice in the Tropical North. Crate59 is proud to present their first exhibition of decks, designed tees and printed works.
