Alex Cuffe | Brisbane, Queensland
Alex explores the physicality of objects in relation to concepts from science, ecology, physics, kinetics, aesthetics and function. Natural phenomena including live material such as plant matter are placed in relation to new media technologies. He treats these materials as ‘kinetic’; transferring ‘vibrations’ of light and sound to different forms of energy. He is increasingly engaged and informed by the traditions of sound art and permaculture. Sound art addresses an audience directly, yet is ephemeral and may exist only in the moment of the performance or activation. While permaculture, an alternative ‘low-tech’ gardening philosophy, provides a medium to communicate cycles of biodegradability and sustainability. By combining traditional art practices and skills, new media innovations, organic gardening and sonic sculpture Alex creates a modern, innovative, environmentally conscious and highly personal art practice.
